Join Speech Quest, a Dungeons & Dragons Group for Communication

Does your child have communication challenges? Do they have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) goal related to speech, language, or social communication? This unique Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) group is designed to provide a supportive environment for kids to build communication skills while embarking on heroic adventures!

What is it?

A group-based role-playing experience led by a licensed speech-language pathologist where children and teens work on individualized speech and language skills through storytelling and collaborative problem-solving.

Using the context of a Dungeons & Dragons adventure, kids will:

  • Practice narrative language, problem solving, collaboration, emotional regulation, and perspective-taking.

  • Build authentic social connections with peers through shared experiences and interests.

  • Strengthen specific speech, language, and social-communication skills in a fun, motivating way.

How Does It Work?

  • Individualized Focus: Each child’s goals will align with their IEP, plan of care, or specific needs. The group is kept small (4 players) so each player has many opportunities to work on their specific skills.

  • Accessible Materials: Groups will be universally designed to account for each player’s specific accommodation and accessibility needs. We will use visuals, objects, maps, movement, breaks, and more to make the environment kid friendly and engaging. I also encourage kids to bring any tools they find helpful. This is a fidget friendly space!

  • Skill Development: Role-playing games are inherently language rich. They offer opportunities to problem solve, recover from failure, “future think,” and work collaboratively with peers. All of these skills are reinforced in a low stakes environment. Not only will your child get lots of practice with their individual goals, but they will also have opportunities to grow in other areas as well.

  • Parent Involvement: Parents will be provided progress updates and tools to continue skill-building at home. Parents will receive a summary of the story that was co-created during each session. This will allow for additional reinforcement and recall of the skills that we worked on. It will also help kids recall the events from the adventure. Parents will also receive data on their child’s speech therapy goals and a summary of progress at the end of the 8 weeks.

Who Can Join? Kids who:

  • Have communication-related IEP goals or challenges.

  • Need a supportive environment to develop speech, language, and social skills.

  • Love creativity and immersive storytelling.
